Producer Insights with GENEX Territory Sales Manager Zane Barragree

As a beef producer, you are always being asked to do more with less. That idea touches almost every aspects of our industry. The U.S. cow herd has been shrinking, driven by an aging producer demographic, drought and high input costs. At the same time, younger generations are struggling to find their way back to the farm. Several factors play into this. High land values and years of razor-thin margin or operating at a loss do not attract younger generations.

That’s why I think producers of all ages need to stick together. We have to keep what land we have in production and find a way forward where everyone is profitable.

Some of these factors are out of our control. Still, the future can be bright if producers keep a sharp pencil and figure out what works best for their individual operation. Realistically, I don’t believe the cow herd will build back to where it once was. Instead, we need to focus on what we have available and make the most with it. I think genetics will be huge moving forward, even though each producer’s genetic solution may look different. There is a place for every one of us – and every genetic strategy. So, focus on the cow and what works for you. Then build a profitable beef cow herd around what works best for your operation.

Behind the Insights: A Q&A with Zane

Tell us about yourself.

I grew up playing hockey and showing Angus cattle. My dad fostered a deep passion for the beef business in me. Together, we run our cows in the Beartooth Mountain region of south central Montana. We sell bulls in the spring and a handful of elite females in the fall. I’ve made lifelong connections with people in this industry. My wife, Sam, and I consider it an immense privilege to be immersed in such a grassroots, integrity-based and hard-working class of people and, furthermore, to be able raise our boys, Brooks (5) and Baylor (4), in this lifestyle.

What previous experiences prepared you for this role?

For me, running our own cows has taught me so much. Friendships with producers across the country have also shown me what different regions have in common and where their needs differ.

Who has made the biggest impact on your career and why?

My dad. He taught me the value of the mother cow, considerations for a breeding program that stands the test of time and how to never quit. Without those lessons, I think I’d have a hard time connecting with the people I work with every day in this role.

How do you bring value to beef producers?

We have always focused on the cow. So, I understand the importance of a good cow herd being a solid foundation and the value that can bring to any operation.

What goals would you like to accomplish in your current position?

My main goal is to add as much value as possible to each operation. I understand the importance of genetics and the forethought it takes to keep an operation successful for generations. I believe the beef industry is a people business. My goal is to build trust with beef producers across my area.

What do you enjoy most about working with beef producers?

I love their passion for what they do. They’re resilient and handle whatever the market or Mother Nature throws their way.

Fun Question: What is your favorite cut of beef?

Ribeye
