Producer Insights with GENEX Territory Sales Manager Gail Rippe

Gail Rippe family

From neighbors helping neighbors to trusted advisors helping producers navigate tough decisions, the people around you often make as much difference as the resources you have. That’s why I believe one of the best investments you can make in your operation is building a strong network of people you trust. Surround yourself with people who understand the beef industry and get involved. Be willing to give back by supporting the organizations and events that matter to you.

Build a circle of trusted advisors you can turn to along the way. That may include industry experts, agricultural lenders, professional organizations, veterinarians or fellow rancher mentors. These are important relationships that can help you navigate the challenges of high land values and competition for the land, startup costs, unpredictable weather and volatile markets.

You do not have to navigate every challenge alone. A strong network can offer practical perspective, help you weigh your options and keep your ranch moving toward its goals.

Behind the Insights: A Q&A with Gail

Tell us about yourself.

My wife, Janet, and I live in southwest Nebraska, near the Kansas and Colorado state lines. We operate a first-generation Angus and SimAngus seedstock ranch. We also own Rippe Solutions, offering web-based sale management software and on-site clerking services for seedstock producers.

We have two young adult-age children, Allison and Nathan, who are integral parts of our everyday lives. Allison is a registered nurse in Lincoln, Nebraska, and Nathan is studying agricultural systems technology at the University of Nebraska.

What previous experiences prepared you for this role?

I have worked in beef production throughout my adult life. I spent more than 20 years in the feedyard sector, with roles that included riding pens, working on the processing crew and management roles. From there, I moved into heifer development with Heartland Cattle Co. in McCook, Nebraska. There, I learned how detailed records and careful management can support the bottom line of any business, particularly ranching. Janet and I also started our cow-calf venture during that time.

Those experiences taught me how to survive and thrive in a high-stress, fast-paced environment, pay attention to the details and bring my best effort every day.

Who has made the biggest impact on your career and why?

John Fortin, retired yard manager at Decatur County Feedyard in Oberlin, Kansas, made the biggest impact on my career. He taught me the importance of hard work and being a strong team member, qualities that continue to help me in my role as a GENEX Territory Sales Manager.

Without his guidance, teaching and influence early in my career, my life would be quite different. He was a true mentor, both personally and professionally!

How do you bring value to beef producers?

I strive to bring a unique perspective shaped by experience across several areas of the beef industry. That background enables me to help producers think outside-the-box to meet their ranch goals.

What goals would you like to accomplish in your current position?

I enjoy a little friendly competition, so my goal is to beat the competitors by offering the best genetics and dependable service in the A.I. industry, alongside a great group of coworkers and beef distributors who care about producer success. Most importantly, I want to make a positive impact on my customers’ lives and contribute to the success of GENEX.

What do you enjoy most about working with beef producers?

I value the opportunity to meet and work with farmers and ranchers from across the country. They are honest, hardworking people, and I appreciate the relationships we build along the way.
