Cooperative Member Spotlight: Steve Sjostrom

October is Cooperative Month, and at GENEX, that means celebrating the people at the core of everything we do: our members. These dairy and beef producers bring passion, innovation and hard work to their operations every day, and we’re proud to share their voices through a special Q&A series this month.

In their stories, you’ll hear not only about their experiences and perspectives, but also how GENEX has partnered with them to achieve their goals and strengthen their herds. It’s a glimpse into the power of working side by side and learning from one another to build a stronger future for agriculture.

Steve Sjostrom

Sjostrom Farms, Lafayette, Minnesota

Tell us about your farm:
Farming has always been in my family. My father farmed with his dad and used Midwest Breeders (a GENEX predecessor) for A.I. back in the 1960s. My dad and I formed a partnership in 1980, though he has since retired. Now, I have one son who farms with me in all aspects except milking.

Today, we milk approximately 100 Holstein cows and raise all of our youngstock. We also purchase another 150 bull calves per year that we raise along with our own.

How long have you been a co-op member of GENEX?
I remember going to district meetings in the 1980s – back when it was Midwest Breeders – and being elected as a delegate shortly after that. So, I’ve been a member as the cooperative evolved and grew into what GENEX is today.

Can you share a specific example of when GENEX support, service or products made a difference for your farm?
Using their mating program for many years now has definitely improved our cows’ feet and legs and udders, which has been our emphasis for many years.

How has your relationship with GENEX staff or field representatives impacted your experience?
Our field rep Bill Dinse has been great to work with. He knows our breeding program and the type of bulls we are looking for. When we run a mating program, he highlights about six bulls that he thinks would work for us, and that is usually the ones we will use. He is also quick to respond if I am in need of supplies.

What do you like about being part of a cooperative?
In addition to the potential to share in profits, membership allows you to be actively involved in the cooperative, offering input and helping elect those who lead.

What do you think GENEX does well when it comes to serving its members?
GENEX is great at looking ahead to the future and being willing to change the way things are done. It sometimes meets opposition, but they are ready to defend it, and it usually works out to be the right direction.

What do you value most about having a voice in the cooperative?
I really appreciate getting to know the board candidates and knowing they are representing my best interests in the decisions they make.
