Cooperative Member Spotlight: Charlie Boyd

GENEX member Charlie Boyd and his family.

October is Cooperative Month, and at GENEX, that means celebrating the people at the core of everything we do: our members. These dairy and beef producers bring passion, innovation and hard work to their operations every day, and we’re proud to share their voices through a special Q&A series this month.

In their stories, you’ll hear not only about their experiences and perspectives, but also how GENEX has partnered with them to achieve their goals and strengthen their herds. It’s a glimpse into the power of working side by side and learning from one another to build a stronger future for agriculture.

Boyd Beef Cattle, Mays Lick, Kentucky

Tell us about your ranch:
Our family’s been raising cattle in north central Kentucky for generations. Boyd Beef Cattle is a family-owned and operated feedstock operation that’s five generations strong. We’ve been producing Hereford cattle for more than 100 years, and we added Angus cattle in 1990. Our herd includes about 200 registered females and 100 commercial cows, which we primarily use as recipients in our progressive embryo program.

We host our annual bull sale on the second Saturday in March, selling both Hereford and Angus cattle to commercial and seedstock producers. In the fall, we hold two female production sales featuring both breeds as well.

How long have you been a co-op member of GENEX?
Boyd Beef Cattle has been a GENEX member for at least 50 years.

What do you think GENEX does well when it comes to serving its members?
GENEX always provides us with consistent and good service. It’s a huge asset.

Can you share a specific example of when GENEX support, service or products made a difference for your ranch?
GENEX has historically had talented and dedicated beef team members. Plus, GENEX offers quality semen from some of the highest quality sires available in the beef industry. We use Push™ calf energy paste on our newborn calves in cold weather with tremendous success.

What advice would you give to a farmer or rancher considering joining GENEX?
The rewards of being part of a cooperative far outweigh any potential issues. Having a voice always has true value.
